About Mrugavadhe Temple

Temple History

The sacred origins of Mrugavadhe Temple

The Mrugavadhe Temple has a rich history dating back to the 12th century during the reign of the Hoysala Empire. According to local legends, the temple was established at the spot where Lord Shiva appeared to a devout hunter in the form of a divine deer (Mriga).

The hunter, who was pursuing a deer for his livelihood, was astonished when the deer transformed into a radiant Shiva Linga. This miraculous event led to the construction of the temple, which became known as Mrugavadhe (meaning "the place where the deer was sacrificed").

Over the centuries, the temple has been renovated and expanded by various rulers and devotees, while maintaining its original sanctity and spiritual significance.
